From his epic first meeting with the art director
of The Saturday Evening Post, Norman Rockwell painted
America as he saw it and thought it to be.
The earliest paintings that populate the first
part of the lsit are mostly paintings of children and dogs. These were
Rockwell's most familiar subjects, having spent svereal years already
painting illustrations for magazines, such as St.Nicholas, Everyland
and Youth's Companion, that were primarily intended for young readers.
Rockwell has also spent time as the art director and cover illustrator
for Boys' Life, the Boy Scouts magazine as well.
He also included some paintings that
illustrations of older Americans as characters. He strongly felt that
the older models had faces with a lot of character. During the early
period he also painted American servicemen during World War One.
During the middle part of his career with the
Post in the 1940's, he also painted American servicemen from World War
Two, including the fictional Willie Gillis.
