National Cowboy MuseumOklahoma City, OklahomaNational Cowboy Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, features two original Norman Rockwell paintings in its permanent collection. The museum is not a true Norman Rockwell museum. The focus is on cowboy art, artifacts and memorabilia. No matter how much we love Rockwell's works, he just did not paint enough cowboy illustrations that still exist to fill a museum. The National Cowboy Museum has two very important cowboy portraits in its collection. That alone makes it worth a visit.
Portrait of Walter Brennan
The two Norman Rockwell paintings in the Museum's collection is Portrait of Walter Brennan and Portrait of John Wayne. Walter Brennan played supporting roles in numerous western films including Support Your Local Sheriff and The Over The Hill Gang. He also portrayed Grandpa Amos McCoy on the television series, The Real McCoys. Portrait of Walter Brennan is a 38 x 31 inch or 96.5 x 78.5 cm oil on canvas painting. Norman Rockwell was commissioned by the museum to paint Portrait of Walter Brennan in 1972. The painting appeared on the cover of the museum's magazine, Persimmon Hill, later in 1972 in the Volume 2, No 4 issue. Portrait of Walter Brennan also appeared in Norman Rockwell's America by Christopher Finch as illustration 312 and in Norman Rockwell, A Definitive Catalogue by Laurie Norton Moffatt on page 971. Portrait of John Wayne
John Wayne was probably the best known cowboy actor of his generation. His film credits include the lead role in some of our favorite western movies, such as Stagecoach, Fort Apache, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, Rio Grande, The Alamo and True Grit. He won an Oscar for his performance as Rooster Cogburn in True Grit Portrait of John Wayne is a 38.5 x 31.5 inch or 98 x 80 cm oil on canvas painting. Rockwell painted the Duke in 1974 just 5 years before Wayne's death and 4 years before the artist's passing. Portrait of John Wayne has been reproduced in Norman Rockwell's America by Christopher Finch as illustration 311 and in Norman Rockwell, A Definitive Catalogue by Laurie Norton Moffatt on page 1041. Of course, the Museum has many other fine works of art in addition to this Norman Rockwell original painting. The museum's permanent galleries include American Cowboy Gallery, Fire Arms Gallery, Americam Rodeo Gallery, Western Performers Gallery, Native American Gallery, Art of the American West and much more. This Museum is definitely worth a visit.

Norman Rockwell Quotes:I'll never have enough time to paint all the pictures I'd like to. No man with a conscience can just bat out illustrations. He's got to put all his talent and feeling into them! Some people have been kind enough to call me a fine artist. I've always called myself an illustrator. I'm not sure what the difference is. All I know is that whatever type of work I do, I try to give it my very best. Art has been my life. Right from the beginning, I always strived to capture everything I saw as completely as possible. The secret to so many artists living so long is that every painting is a new adventure. So, you see, they're always looking ahead to something new and exciting. The secret is not to look back. I can take a lot of pats on the back. I love it when I get admiring letters from people. And, of course, I'd love it if the critics would notice me, too. You must first spend some time getting your model to relax. Then you'll get a natural expression. More at BrainyQuote. Rockwell Favorites
