Swimming Hole by Norman RockwellJune 19, 1920 Issue of The Country GentlemanSwimming Hole, this Norman Rockwell painting, appeared on the cover of The Country Gentleman published June 19, 1920. The alternate title was Hey Fellers, Come On In. The Country Gentleman was published by Curtis Publishing Company. Curtis Publishing also published The Saturday Evening Post. This painting was the twenty-second Country Gentleman cover by Norman Rockwell. Rockwell illustrated thirty-five covers for The Country Gentleman starting in August 1917, the first Cousin Reginald cover, and continuing through April 1922. Swimming HoleWith this painting, Norman Rockwell treats us to another glimpse into the life of a country boy. This painting was only one of 34 Norman Rockwell Country Gentleman covers; here is the list of more Norman Rockwell Country Gentleman scans.
Here is the complete list of all Norman Rockwell magazine covers. This glimpse takes place during a hot summer afternoon. The location is the swimming hole. You have just arrived at the swimming hole. Noticing the 'No Swimming' sign, you are hesitant to just jump in. The boys who are already there implore you. "Hey fellers, come on in!" they yell and swim over to the edge of the pond to wave at you. The two boys swimming in the pond do not seem overly concerned about the 'No Swimming' sign. After all, one of them has hung his jacket on the sign. Possibly, they obtained permission to swim. Possibly, their family owns the pond. Probably, though, they are just rascals! Either way, you have a decision to make. How do you spend this bright summer afternoon... cool and wet or hot and dry .
Remember to check back often.
