Boy with Puppies by Norman RockwellMarch 18, 1922 Issue of The Country GentlemanBoy with Puppies, this Norman Rockwell painting, appeared on the cover of The Country Gentleman published March 18, 1922. An alternate title is A Country Gentleman Boy. This title is found on the cover under the illustration. The Country Gentleman was published by Curtis Publishing Company. The masthead billed it as "The Oldest Agricultural Journal in the World." Curtis Publishing also published The Saturday Evening Post. This illustration was the thirty-fourth Country Gentleman cover by Norman Rockwell. Rockwell painted thirty-five covers for The Country Gentleman starting in August 1917, the first Cousin Reginald cover, and continuing through April 1922. Boy with PuppiesThe puppies look more than half-grown to me. My first thought was "Wow, look at the size of those puppies!" One puppy is looking at us, the other puppy wants to get down. This painting was only one of 34 Norman Rockwell Country Gentleman covers; here is the list of more Norman Rockwell Country Gentleman scans.
Here is the complete list of all Norman Rockwell magazine covers. This is essentially a character study of the boy. The puppies are thrown in for a side interest. A distraction, if you will. A part of the story, but a prop nonetheless. The boy wears a familiar red jacket. We have seen this jacket in many Rockwell illustrations appearing on cover of The Country Gentleman. Rockwell liked to paint both people and things with lots of character. This jacket has lots of character, i.e. it is well worn. Just look at the elbow. The boy is looking directly at us. He is making an emotional connection with the audience. With both his broad smile and his smiling eyes, he conveys to us how thrilled he is to be carrying those two puppies. He is a typical example of a country boy of the twenties .
